My students need a variety of high interest books such as the Divergent Series, the Hush, Hush Saga, and others for our classroom library in many genres and difficulty levels to excite them about reading.
"The real purpose of books is to trap the mind into doing its own thinking" Christopher Morley I believe that books are the most important gift you can give to a child. Having access to shelves full of exciting books gives my students access to other worlds, places and times.
I have the best students in the world.
I teach mainly freshmen, at the Honors level. We are not from a wealthy district, but my students are highly motivated and deserve the best that can be provided. Most of my students read well above grade level, and they are on track to go to college. My students are incredibly motivated and read ravenously- they have already read through all of the books which interest them in my classroom library, and it's barely the beginning of the second marking period.
My students read well above grade level- many of them already read at a post high school level. It is really important to me that they retain a life-long love of reading. I plan to accomplish this by flooding my classroom with high interest engaging books to inspire them to continuously add to their "To Read" list. Having these books on the shelves in my classroom, "in their face", so to speak, will continue the growth they've begun already.
My Project
I plan to use these books to restock my classroom library. I pride myself on having shelves full of high interest newly published young adult and adult books from a variety of genres and authors. In the past few years, many new titles have come out from my students' favorite authors- like John Green, Veronica Roth, or Rainbow Rowell. If I have all the new releases on my shelves, the students and I can engage in a dialogue about highly interesting and exciting titles, which will inspire them to read even more selections.
Our district has a strong commitment to independent reading, where students choose books based on their interests and abilities. Current studies show these methods are the most effective way to not only increase literacy, but to also create a life-long love of learning. The results of this have been remarkable- it works.
By refilling the shelves of my classroom library, my students will be able to expand their reading horizons and develop a life long love of reading.
Funding this project will allow my students to access the newest and most exciting young adult books recently published.
These are the books they are really excited to read, but aren't yet stocked in the school library. Not all of my students can afford to go out and buy every book they'd like to read as soon as it's released. This way, I can hand them the exact book they have been waiting for, and maybe even another title I think they'd like. My students will love these stories as much as I do.
