I teach in a public elementary school in Baton Rouge. There are over 600 students enrolled in our school and it is one of the most ethnically diverse public schools in the area, with 29% of the students coming from immigrant families. 19% of the students in our school are considered to have limited English proficiency, which is significantly higher than the 3% average across Louisiana. Our school provides several ESL programs to support these students.
I often have students that enter my classroom not knowing any English; many of them having just arrived in the U.S.
It often amazes me how quickly they adapt and learn English. Even so, there are often communication barriers that we must learn to overcome in our classroom. This year I have 7 ESL students that speak Spanish, Vietnamese, or Swahili.
I am so honored to teach such a diverse group of students and, even though they're only 5, they have taught me a great deal in return. It is my goal to make my students feel at home in our classroom, while also creating an environment that promotes them to develop a strong sense of pride for their various cultures and heritage.
My Kindergarten students are beginning to discover that they are capable of reading independently and they are so excited! They have been trying to read anything and everything they can find in our classroom. While I do my best to provide them with adequate reading materials, it is difficult given our very limited resources. Most of the books in our classroom library are extremely old and outdated, having been in the classroom long before I began teaching in it. The bindings on them are beginning to fall apart, and most of them are far too difficult for them to read. I see many of them becoming frustrated when they are unable to read the books and I don't want them to become discouraged.
I want to provide my students with a classroom library that better suits their various reading levels.
This is an exciting time for them and I want to equip them with the materials they need to boost their confidence and passion for reading. Having a new library would mean so much to them and would keep them (and myself) excited about reading all year long!
