My Kids Need a Clean Start: Essentials

My students need deodorant, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, washcloths, combs and soap.

My Students

My sixth graders live in an area that is a pocket of poverty. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. The public library that was across the street closed several years ago. As a result, the majority of students do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school.

All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch and many of them are the children of deployed military personnel.

Our school is not a Title One school but my students have needs that are not being met by our school. They are wonderful kids and they deserve a chance.

I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a very transient student population. Over 50% of my class come and go during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Our student population is racially diverse.

My Project

Although 100% of our students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, we are not a Title 1 school. My students live in an area that is becoming a pocket of poverty. Our school does not have a PTA for support. My students generally have families that are struggling to keep above the poverty line.

Last year, I was lucky enough to have a project funded which helped with hygiene supplies but those have run out and I need more.

I want my students to have their best year ever. They are starting sixth grade and grooming, cleanliness and self image are very important. Unfortunately, the families of my students simply cannot afford these "luxuries" like toothpaste.

My students are sometimes dirty and smell. Some are being teased by other students. I have to do something to help my kids. I am asking for essentials including toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant sticks, washcloths, combs, and soap. I know that these simple, basic resources will boost my students’ morale and self-esteem.

These requested supplies will enable my students to clean up and concentrate on their school work. Your donation will make a huge difference in the lives of my students.
