This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in four-year-old kindergarten and this is the first school experience for most of my students. They are learning how to manage all of the ways that school is different from home. One of the loveliest parts of our day is when we have independent reading time, we do this twice a day. The children can choose to sit in beanbags, wobble chairs or just grab a big pillow or stuffed animal and find a comfy place in the room to read. They can read by themselves or join a small group of friends. They share with one another things that they find interesting.

The Incredible World series of nonfiction books have become a classroom favorite.

They are filled with amazing photography that makes one feel they are right next to the animal that is the focus of the book. The children have their favorite ones that they go back to again and again. This project is part 2 of a previous project. I did not know this series was so extensive. I like to have nonfiction texts that can be paired up with fictional stories that I read to the children. Many of the characters in young children's books are animals. I try to have as many of the animals that reoccur in our stories as stuffed animals in the class. We use them as props for retelling stories that then enter the children's play and sometimes we bring them to our outdoor classroom to use in literacy extension activities. The books included in this project will expand our nonfiction library and add more nonfiction/fiction book pairings. Between the book pairings, stuffed animals as buddy readers and the outdoor classroom extension activities the children receive an interactive experience with the books we read in the classroom.
