My Students
Imagine a Reading Club where third graders could develop and share an interest in reading while working on anti-bullying skills.
My students deserve a chance.
The population of my neighborhood is changing. The economic downturn has impacted my students. According to the US Census, the average per capita income was only 2/3 that of the rest of the city. Over 1/2 of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. Although they represent the very best in America, many students do not have the funds for clothes, school supplies, or recreational reading materials.
Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. It is 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. 10% of my students are in bilingual/ bi-cultural programs. This year, when we became a safe harbor school, we had students bused from other sections of town, and the ethnic composition of our school changed. We have a problem with bullies on the playground and in the classroom.
My Project
Many of my third grade boys are reluctant readers, and they read way below their grade level. As a result of their poor skills, they are teased when they have to read out loud or have to do a book report. I am always trying to help them find something to read. They always want to read series books, but I do not have any.
I need more books that will appeal to students. These new high interest series books will 1.) give my guys an opportunity to find something interesting to read; 2.) help them improve their self esteem; and 3.) encourage them to talk about their exciting books. When you read and discuss together, you learn that everyone has strengths. You can celebrate those strengths. I am asking for series books and copies of Bullying in the Schools so my students can learn to use their time constructively instead of destructively. We have essentially no money for new books. We need the help of DonorsChoose.org.
Sharing a great books is a great equalizer.
Books promote understanding and respect. I desperately need series books for my students who are reluctant readers and often bullied. I want to use Bullying in Schools as a discussion starter with my third graders in my library and team it with the reading of new series books. Help Townsend Press help us to acquire these important books.
