My Future Leaders Need Laptops

My students need an HP netbook to visit educational websites and a digital camera to capture our hands-on learning projects.

My Students

Most of my students do not have access to a computer or the Internet at home. Usually, the only opportunity my students have to use a computer is during their time at school. The sad truth is that my classroom is only equipped with one desktop computer and one laptop.

Each day my classroom is full of students eager to learn about the fast paced world around them.

They each have unique needs and strengths that motivate them to soak up every minute of the school day. School is an oasis to many of them because of their home conditions- living in overcrowded apartments and trailers with only the basic living essentials. 87% of my students receive free or reduced lunch based on their family’s income. Despite the hardships many of them have faced already in life, they remain dedicated to their studies and just want to learn.

My Project

I have two overworked computers in my classroom and increasing the number to three would be a drastic improvement for my students. I had arranged a daily computer schedule to ensure my students were able to have equal time using the computers. However, the only way to fit all of my students on the two computers during the week was to have two students per day eat lunch in my classroom while using a computer. Having one more HP netbook in our classroom would give students even more of an opportunity to visit educational websites and educational computer programs. I am also requesting a digital camera to further the technology use in the classroom. With a camera my students will be able to capture all of the learning that takes place on a daily basis. Recently I asked my students if they had ever used a digital camera and only about half the class threw their hands in the air. My students deserve to have experience with technology that will put them on the pathway to success.

In a world utilizing more technology every day, my classroom of fourth graders should have every opportunity to be “Tech Savvy”.

With no computers at home, the best window of opportunity for these students to gain this experience is during the school day. Currently, with only two working computers the students are not able to spend quality time familiarizing themselves with technology or getting to experience the standards-based websites/programs that are engaging to them.
