My students need subscriptions to Scholastic News and Time for Kids Weekly Magazines so that I can engage them with informational text related to science and social studies.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Del Gatto's classroom raised $448
This project is fully funded
My Students
My "firsties" are very curious, inquisitive, and they thrive during hands-on learning experiences. I teach in a Title I school in an urban area, and most of my students have extremely limited access to educational opportunities beyond our classroom. Donors choose provides me with materials that allow me to create activities that maximize student engagement and foster a love for learning. When I went to college to become a teacher I never imagined the types of constraints I would encounter due to a severe lack of funding. When I plan a unit I have endless ideas for lessons and activities that flood my brain, but a shortage of money impacts what I am allowed to actually do with my students. Donors chose affords me the opportunities to provide my students with the educational opportunities they deserve.
My Project
I have purchased many books for my classroom library to teach science and social studies, but I do not have the funds to purchase enough books to teach science and social studies on a daily basis. A subscription to Scholastic News and Time for Kids would allow us to have new topics to discuss every week while also giving each student access to an individual text at their reading level. We will read through the weekly issues together and have discussions in small groups and with partners. Students will write about the things they wonder about and I will create a bulletin board where students can pose questions about things we will research together.
This project will improve my classroom by simply giving my students the resources they deserve.
Last year was the first year that I was able to utilize these magazines in my classroom. One thing that I did not realize until I had this experience is how excited my students would be to take the issues home and share them with their parents/guardians. The weekly issues are an additional piece of at-home reading material for my students and their parents to read together. Many parents commented at parent conferences about how excited their children were to share what they learned that week when they brought home their weekly issues.
It is a fact that there are funding inequities in education. My students deserve everything that other first grade students receive in other neighborhoods. I am just trying to do what I can to balance the scale any way that I can.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
