Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are autistic, intellectually disabled, speech impaired and/or other health impaired.

They enjoy coming to school every day.

Each one thrives on structure and routine. Their favorite time of day is "Sign-in & Calendar" when they use the Activboard, greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and "show off."

Our school is very supportive and inclusive. My students enjoy participating in activities such as reading buddies, grade level inclusion, and peer to peer mentoring. Wherever we go in school, other students call out "hello" to my students and call them by name. They ARE an important part of our school community.

My Project

This project is specially for my 5th grade girls. It includes: menstrual pads, liners, wipes, disposable bags, deodorant, and accessories. Due to the severity and range of disabilities, the girls will be instructed to carry out a daily hygiene routine. Our school nurse presents to all the 5th grade girls. However, my students require implicit instruction with opportunities to practice.

Getting your period should be a celebration.

Unfortunately, for this population it's quite stressful for parents. To reduce parent anxiety I offer instruction to parents, teach the necessary skills to students, and provide visual supports to keep at home. Being independent can reduce the likelihood of abuse for children and adults with disabilities.
