My First Classroom for Firsties

Help me give my students a functional first grade classroom with a rug they can all sit on at once, flexible seating for when we read in workshop, and bags for their at level and personal choice reading.

My Project

This year I have been blessed a group of first graders who have a true desire to gain independence and unlock the written word. It is their thirst for this independence that has made me want to give them all I can to make this a super enjoyable and successful year in their careers as students.

In funding this project you will help me create an environment where my students will enjoy each component of the reading and writing workshop.

Having a classroom rug where they can all sit at once gives me a chance to build frequent routine movement into their day while maintaining focus on the curriculum. It will provide my children a second work area and the ability to see and collaborate with their entire community as we investigate new topics and problem solve together.

The other pieces of the project will fill out the remaining work stations and flexible seating options for the classroom. The stools will make for comfortable and yet sturdy guided reading group seating, the cushions will allow children to sit around the room with buddies to read together, form small cooperative groups, or relax somewhere safe and cozy as they explore at level and personal choice books during our workshop read-to-self time.

Finally, the book bags will proved each child a designated place to house books at their appropriate level chosen weekly with me and their personal choice books that they can read when we have independent reading time during readers workshop. Keeping these books challenging and fresh while protected and accessible will help the children to use this independent time to not only practice reading but grow to as educated citizens who enjoy reading.
