I teach Film as Literature, which is a 12th grade English course, at a high poverty college-prep charter high school. This English course is designed to prepare students to meet the challenges and rigor of college-level reading and writing using film as the primary medium of focus. Once students begin my course, they become passionate about film, its history and critical analysis. But, without adequate academic support, it will be very difficult for my students to acquire the skills necessary to successfully transition to the university.
With every new budget meeting concerning the educational future of my school, the forecast becomes bleaker. So, there is currently no available funding to purchase laptops to provide support to students in my Film as Literature course. Without this access to laptops, my students will not be able to do the appropriate research on web-based subscription databases connected to film study and other research oriented activities. And, this lack of technology will affect my students’ chances of completing the requirements of this college-prep English course.
I am requesting two HP laptops for my students to use for film study. They will be able to use these HP laptops to satisfy 12th grade English Language Arts standards. Using these HP laptops, my students will be working to meet the college-prep standards required for graduation and getting into college.
Your help will make it possible for my students to use HP laptops to become critical viewers of film, as part of an English curriculum, and to successfully transition into college. This project will encourage my students to independently further their knowledge of film. These HP laptops will also help them to developing independent researching skills and utilize sources in their writing.
