My Students
Remember the movie, Field of Dreams, "Build it and they will come"; well, I feel that if I provide it (iPad with a CAD program), they will become! Engineers that is! Given the opportunity, students embrace STEM concepts. I would love to offer in a students learning center, that opportunity
I teach at a school of around 1300 students.
We serve grades 6-8. Many of our students are of the poverty level and have not been exposed to many STEM concepts. Out of the 122 seventh graders I teach, sixteen are from non English speaking homes and six others with individual education plans. My class period consists of teaching content guided practice, and then independent practice so I can work with small groups to focus on then vocabulary and basic information. I always have those students who finish their independent work early. I have centers set up where the quick finishers can further their learning through exploration in all different areas of math and science. I really try and make these centers "STEM" focused, fun, and engaging for my students. I like to encourage them to think outside of the box. This has even led to our developing an Engineering club where we build bridges, use GPS to find coordinates and we are about to embark on shooting an Egg Launcher Rocket
My Project
But what I am lacking is a CAD program. I have had a local college offer to 3D print my student's creations if they were to have access to a CAD program. I am so excited about this opportunity and I think how I can reach my female students who like to "design". Unfortunately, I have seen firsthand a lack in confidence in students, especially girls, to pursue math and science careers. I want to change the reluctance by igniting their passion to be creativity using a CAD program on a pad mini. I can only imagine their excitement to see how a simple idea of a pendant, could take shape on a CAD program and then be printed for them to wear.
Any donation to this project will be very much appreciated!
I know how creative my students are. I want to provide them with the opportunity to experience having a thought or idea blossom into a tangible object. I truly believe if we provide students with the opportunities, they will become more inclined to go into fields of engineering. I want to plant the seeds of "I can do this", "this interests me," "I am a designer," " I am an engineer". Help me to provide them the opportunity to become.
