I teach at a school of around 1300 students. We serve grades 6-8. Many of our students are of the poverty level and have not been exposed to many STEM concepts. Out of the 122 seventh graders I teach, sixteen are from non English speaking homes and six others with individual education plans. My class period consists of teaching content guided practice, and then independent practice so I can work with small groups to focus on then vocabulary and basic information. I always have those students who finish their independent work early. I have centers set up where the quick finishers can further their learning through exploration in all different areas of math and science. I really try and make these centers "STEM" focused, fun, and engaging for my students. I like to encourage them to think outside of the box. This has even led to our developing an Engineering club where we build bridges, use GPS to find coordinates and we are about to embark on shooting an Egg Launcher Rocket
