My Dog Ate My Homework!

My students need crayons, markers, colored pencils and scissors to include in their "homework helper" packs.

Nobody is perfect. Did you ever forget to do your homework? I know I sure did, but it wasn't because I didn't have a box of crayons or a pencil. I am currently teaching third grade in Illinois. Many of my students come from low income households. They are bright, inquisitive, children who come to school everyday ready to learn. However, continuing the learning process at home can sometimes be problematic.

Many of my student's do not have adequate school supplies at home. Consider these examples: Teddy, a very smart, studious child, arrives to my classroom with a worried look on his face. He has completed just half of his math homework. With tears in his eyes, he tells me that he couldn't follow all the directions for coloring because he only has 3 crayons at home. For Caring Week, the students are going to make a card at home for a classmate. Natalie asks if she can make the card at school because she doesn't have any markers or scissors at home. This is the same little girl who doesn't have boots or a hat because "Mom can only afford mittens this year."

I am already on my way to solving this homework supply shortage. A local agency has donated pencil cases, pencils, erasers, and rulers. I just need crayons, colored markers, colored pencils, and scissors to complete my supply list. The students and I will then assemble all the supplies into Homework Helper kits that the students can check out each night.
