My students need a digital camera to help them create their own autobiographies and the protection plan will keep the equipment running well for at least two years.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My gifted classroom is constantly bubbling with energy. You see the eagerness of my students to learn and their thirst for knowledge is immense. I want to encourage my students to take that energy and create their own autobiographies. I believe that all children are the future.
My students come from immigrant families and many of them lack the exposure to valuable life experiences that build their background knowledge.
They also lack exposure to different types of genres in literature. Although they love reading, their lack of exposure to a variety of literature limits them. Their parents are concerned and caring but in many cases lack the knowledge needed to offer their students any assistance with things such as homework. Because of the language barrier or illiteracy, many of my students have never had their parents read to them let alone help them with homework. In fact, many times my students are the only ones that speak English and they help their parents.
My Project
Although the uses for a digital camera in a classroom are endless, my immediate project will be to have my students create their own autobiography with photographs for their illustrations. As a result, my students will be able to develop their understanding of autobiographies through a story that is extremely familiar to them, themselves.
I will also give my students the opportunity to work in cooperative learning groups to take daily photographs of their activities at school. These photographs will be compiled over time by the students in chronological order to create a final timeline book. The book will be titled "A Year in My Life". By completing this project my students will learn about timelines, autobiographies, and the work and dedication needed to achieve a long term goal.
Research shows that when students are actively engaged in the learning process they are more likely to retain the concepts.
They will become curious observers of life. These donations will also help foster a love of learning. Who knows, I may have a future historian in my class after this project.
