We are a fairly rural school with around 500 students. Hurricane Harvey caused flooding in every room on our campus. We are currently housed at the High School campus with 2 other campuses in our district. Like our school, the majority of our students and staff also had flood waters enter their homes.
Funding for this project will help to replenish our school with much-needed furniture and supplies.
I will use the desk and table to help students with school work. I often spend time tutoring students who have trouble in class. This will give them a safe environment in which to meet. I also serve as a mentor for students who are struggling with school, grades, home, and many other issues. This will give my students and I a place to sit and go over possible solutions the problems.
Many of our students are still out of their homes, most living in travel trailers. It will be wonderful for our school to have new furniture as we begin the transition back to our school.
My Project
When entering my school after Hurricane Harvey, I was in awe of the destruction done by water...Every room in our school was covered in a wet slime. Mold was beginning to grow where once students happily roamed from class to class with their friends.
A desk is just the beginning.
My students and I will be able to look back on this hardship as a learning experience. I know that through our journey we have learned many things about ourselves as well as others. Many of my students gave of themselves to help others who were trapped by flood water. Now they deserve a school rebuilt stronger and better than ever.
