My Corn is Taller Than Yours: The Science Behind Agriculture
My students need 4 stereo microscopes to begin their study of agriculture at the microscopic level.

My Students
The study of agriculture is not just cows, sows, and plows anymore. Help me help them learn about insects and diseases challenging American farmers and help them discover ways to cure these ailments.
I teach high school agriculture in a rural district in NE Iowa.
Most of my students live in one of the two rural communities, but very few are actually farm raised. It is my challenge to get students motivated about the wonderful world of agriculture through things other than tractors and farm fields. Agriculture is one of the oldest life sciences. It is through these students that this world and more specifically this state must find a way to feed 9 billion people by 2050, on less land than we farm today. Please help me do just that, not feed 9 billion, but inspire students to take on that challenge.
My Project
I am requesting 4 stereo microscopes for my students to be able to take magnified looks of specific plant and insect parts for study. We will use these microscopes in just about every class I teach from animal and plant science to biotechnology. I am not requesting these for just one class or one assignment, but rather will be used several times throughout the year in multiple classes and for students to use on their own in their supervised agricultural experience projects and through the agri-science fair.
This year will be the first year of a new curriculum in agricultural science.
The curriculum is very student directed and is calling for an increase in science supplies. Historically, agriculture has been very hands on but with the increase in common core alignment, agriculture teachers are needing to beef up their teachings of science. With that comes an increased cost, something that small districts struggle with. These microscopes will really help my students see their future!
