Help me give my students build compassion and social justice for students with learning disabilities and non-fluent English learners. I need a computer/ printer that are capable of recording spoken real-life situations to build communication equity.
Next year, I will keep teaching US History and in addition I will also teach English Language Learners and students with Special Education services in stand-alone supplement classes to build literacy; reading, writing, speaking, and listening across all of the content areas. We are so incredibly isolated and rural, that it is hard to give the students the full language-building experience without high-quality technology, something the cost of which prohibits me from purchasing with school funds. These two groups are performing at statistically significant lower levels than students without services.
I am requesting the computer so my English fluent students can help non-fluent students by making videos of people engaged in authentic conversational exchanges in order for them to take ownership of supporting their peers with learning needs, languages and cultures that are different than their own to help those learners feel confident, understood, and valued in our classroom community.
I need the capacity to edit large videos and picture files to make meaningful materials for my students. By employing the technology skills of my students, these students will also benefit through the development of understanding, equity and social justice for all learners. Lamination and the printer are for class visuals. I will match a part of your donation by purchasing Apple Final Cut Pro with my own money ($300).
I will measure the success of this project with student satisfaction surveys, student participation logs, and an classroom communication observations with the goal of an increase in confident oral communication from these targeted groups. Our school focus is discourse and these learners are the ones who are most in need and having fluent speakers assist them in building the confidence to speak in class with help them synergistically both socially and academically.
