My students need to participate in an exciting in-class architecture program, "My City", that will engage them in a building and design experience to exercise their spatial and visual problem solving skills.
All of our second graders are eager learners who need and thrive with hands-on and creative learning experiences. I teach at a Title I school with limited resources. For most students in our school, they have little opportunity to participate in hands-on project-based learning outside of school, so I want to bring this exciting project experience right into their classroom.
This project will bring a teaching artist - a trained architect from Kidspire - to our school to enrich our second graders' study of urban communities, history, and geometry.
I want our students to learn about their own urban community, New York City, gain awareness of their environment, and apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to a hands-on creative experience that integrates math and science teaching and concepts.
My Project
"My City" is an exciting 4-session architecture program taught by a Kidspire teaching artist that will engage students in an art, building, and design experience.
Each session will have students exercising their spatial and visual problem solving skills, be introduced to architecture styles and the concepts of scale and proportion, and apply their own artistic expressions through the painting and drawing of architectural details.
Kidspire will provide the architecture and design materials and teaching expertise for every second grade student to construct their own scale model of a New York City skyscraper. Not only will our students be immersing themselves in a multifaceted creative project, they will gain a better appreciation of their urban environment.
