My students crave activities that involve their hands and feet as well as their minds. If I tell them about Music, they yawn. If I show them how to play an instrument, they nap. If I put an instrument in their hands and guide them towards understanding and proficiency, they smile, work, and grow.
My students represent a melting pot of cultures from around the globe.
Seventeen different languages are spoken by students and parents in our school community. One thing that they can all agree on is that Music is great. Many of our families are immigrants and/or refugees from Europe and the Middle East. It is very uplifting to see them all working together. They are a model of what our world should be.
My Project
We are learning to read, write, and play music. Many students have expressed interest in bucket drumming. I have gathered several dozen 3 and five gallon buckets from local businesses and we have started playing. At first we used a supply of rhythm sticks we already owned but discovered quickly that they break too easily. We would really benefit from a supply of real drum sticks that we could use without fear of breaking them. Hickory drum sticks will not break when used for bucket drumming.
We started bucket drumming after the winter break and the impact was immediate.
All of the students in the classes using the buckets are excited but impatient when they have to take turns because we only have three pair of real sticks. Your donation will allow ALL the students in every class to participate together.
