My Books, My Possessions

My students need quality books related to themes to teach about diversity, families & senses. The books, part of our lending library will allow the students to feel ownership & security when borrowing books.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. B's classroom raised $380

My Students

I teach in a low income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City. 85% of our students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches. The students are served breakfast & lunch. Our students rely on the school meals for their daily source of nutrition. The school services many homeless students. These students live in transient shelters. The homeless students have poor nutrition, resulting in poor health and are frequently absent. We have several special needs students in our class receiving special services.

There are 25 students, of different ethnic backgrounds and for many, this is their first school experience.

We have 10 students who do not speak English. The students speak Creole, Arabic, and Spanish. The students are African American, Haitian, Latino and Arabic. For the majority of the students, this is their first educational experience. Many of them have not heard stories being read aloud and do not have educational toys at home. The students come to my classroom to a place where they are comfortable: socially & emotionally.

My Project

My students will receive 30 new stories to our classroom library. These books will deepen their comprehension of the units of study: 5 senses, diversity family and baby animals. The books "And Tango Makes Three", "Some Kids Are Blind", "Some Kids Are Deaf", "Some Kids Use Wheelchairs" and "I Love My Hair" are some of the books that introduce diverse characters to the young child. These diverse themes will build positive identities and a respect for differences means weaving diversity into the fabric of children's everyday lives.

Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world & lending books out to all the students is key for letting them build a relationship with the books.

It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. This project will infuse thematic learning with high quality literature. The new titles will add awareness and expand the students understanding. The students will be able to independently read the books during free reading time. All the students borrow library books over the weekend.

Each Friday, the students choose books to borrow so that an adult can read to them at home. Many students who are homeless do not have the resources such as books at home. Homeless children usually move from shelter to shelter in a hurry. They are not able to own a lot of things. When the children see the books in the classroom library and are then able to take them home, they feel secure. The books from this project are quality pieces of literature that I want the children to hear read in class and feel comfortable about taking home. Thus, making the school home connection more secure.
