My Book Shelf Should Represent My Students' Backgrounds

My Project
Students at my school are amazing. They're compassionate, resilient, smart, and hardworking. Unfortunately, many of them are lacking in vital academic skills or simply do not have th confidence in those skills to always excel in academic settings.
Research has shown that reading provides many benefits to adolescents that will continue throughout their lives, including an increase in empathy, emotional maturity, as well as improvement in vocabulary and other academic skills.
I would love to provide my senior ELA students with reading materials that are interesting, relevant, and comprehensible. While I do currently have a range of books for SSR, not all of them represent the identities and experiences of my particular school population.
I have chosen a specific set of YA and books and graphic novels that I would love to see on my bookshelf based on award lists of authors who are AAPI, who write about struggles with poverty, and/or who write about other marginalized characters. I want my students to see the full range of possibilities, and not merely the "dead white guys" that we frequently assign in schools. I know that they will benefit from options that they can personally relate to--that reflect their struggles and realities in a positive and hopeful light. Mahalo!
