In 2020, I crafted an agroforestry curriculum entitled, My Beloved Kaia`ulu. This unit encourages food safety and food security through intergenerational conversations with elders through interviews that capture familial stories.
This curriculum was successful, slowly transforming my students into “student agroforest researchers,” a skill building continuum reinforced in social studies and science (STEM) courses.
Undoubtedly, meeting sustainable practices that align with student success goals at our school. However, the project needs economic support to provide work share supplies.
My students live on the famous north shore of O'ahu, in marginalized, multi-generational homes. We are landlocked, with traffic delays on hazardous roads, where citizens are unaware of hanging power lines and damaged roads with limited access to farm fresh food sources. Donations, grants and small loans cushion the use of personal expenses to organize place-based programs like this.
The garden supplies are needed to plant kalo (taro), ulu (breadfruit) and other canoe plants. Student irrigate and weed by hand, so gloves are needed. The 10 X 10 canopy, benches and picnic table provide a portable learning station. I can set these education niches at locations close to the object of study at the farm/seashore. Students learn propagation techniques, effective eradication of invasives, consistent removal of micro plastics and soil remediation and regeneration. The first aid supplies are necessary to safeguard against infections when out on the field. The granola bars support nutrition when students arrive, and at lunch I serve kalua pig and cabbage to everyone.
These donations potentially turn my classroom into a training ground for future konohiki farmers. The supplies offer me the flexibility to develop a pathway to fast track critically authentic `aina aloha curriculum. These are unrealized learning and growth areas that offer students a sense of Hawai`i.
