This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into the classroom every day eager to learn and ready to redefine themselves as scholars, mathematicians, scientists, artists, writers, archaeologists, and engineers. They make great strides in speaking their first sentences, learning to successfully go to the bathroom ,mainstreaming into their general education classrooms, and mastering life skills to live as independent as possible. They love collaborating with their peers, using technology to support their learning, uncovering methods to retain knowledge, and modeling traits of democratic citizens to become leaders in their school. Our school, a Title I, is a part of a nationwide program that serves students who come from low-income families.
Despite the many challenges that these students face, my students know that my high expectations for them does not waiver.
I continue to challenge my students to become contributors to society and know that greatness is oozing out of all of them.
My Project
As a brand new special education teacher, I want to build a functional classroom that best serves my amazing students. I teach kids with autism and as of right now I have three lovely boys who are in the 3rd-5th grade. All of them are nonverbal but are so eager to communicate through assistive technology (AT), sign language, and eventually verbally! My students need an interactive classroom to foster a love for learning. Success is dependent on the classroom environment and the available resources. I want to give my students the best opportunity to live as independently as possible.
Children with autism thrive off of having sensory items (wobble cushion, flex ball, kinetic sand, water beads, etc) that make them feel safe and calm.
These therapy tools and items help my kids with sensory processing so they can function more independently in their everyday lives. Other necessary items to promote independence for daily living are headphones to help regulate their noise sensitivity, manipulatives to learn grade-content curriculum, and real-life objects that they’ll use later in life.
