Our elementary school serves children Pre-K through 5th grade. It is located in a neighborhood and is situated on many acres of open field where the students might see a bald eagle in the morning, two scissortail flycatchers playing on a small tree right outside our classroom window and turtles on the playground at noon. My students enjoy the wonder around them.
When recently "testing out" wobble seats I had several students say, "Mrs. Hoefer I can concentrate more while I work!!" My students enjoy only 25 minutes of recess each day.
They have PE only once every three days and that is not enough physical activity for 7-8 year olds. To provide them with opportunities to move about within the walls of the classroom is important to me. Flexible seating will allow them to strengthen their core as they work in the classroom. Often times they are out of their seats and standing while working. They want and need the opportunity to move about.
My Project
My students will be able to strengthen their core while working within the walls of the classroom. Strengthening their core helps all aspects of learning from attention span to engagement in each lesson.
Why not work with students' needs instead of against them?
With technology keeping students' attention, it takes a lot to keep students still while they learn. Studies show that movement helps engage their minds. I want to create this atmosphere for my students so they are comfortable with learning.
Is it most comfortable for you to read a novel while seated at a desk? Students will have the ability to choose seating that suits their learning needs. These wobble stools, along with other options in the classroom, will create a positive, engaging and innovative classroom.
