Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is set in a mixed race, mixed culture, and low economic status area. We are a bilingual school with several different languages spoken, mainly Spanish though. We are a Title One school with about 90% of students receiving free or reduced lunch.

My students are curious and full of wonder, whether it is a book about space, animals, or magical wizards they want to know about it!

In our classroom, we celebrate differences while also finding that we have more in common than we thought. There are several classmates who are refugees from the middle east and Africa, this educates all students in tolerance and acceptance.

I am very proud of my students and their ability to adapt, even when it is hard. I have students that are only with me for a few months but, I see them make progress and that is why I am here.

My Project

My students need a place to dig into a good book with comfy carpets, bean bag chairs, and stability balls to sit on and get engrossed in another world. We can help them discover their next big idea! One way I do this is to find books, magazines and other written materials that interest them. The only drawback is WHERE they read.

It's hard to concentrate or enjoy time reading when you feel uncomfortable, but with options for comfortable seating, you could easily get lost in a good book!

I want my students to ask for more reading time, to come in and be excited to read the next chapter of whichever book they are in the middle of, to have book clubs where EVERYONE has read the book!
