Musician-Specific Band Chairs: Sit Straight, Breathe, Play!

My Students

My students are the greatest, most deserving kids I have ever met. They are hard-working, dedicated, sweet, and love to play music. My school is in a low-income area, with nearly 100% of students being eligible for free school lunches. Our music program serves much of the high school and middle school population.

Our school is unique because of the music classes offered to our students.

Two of our high school music classes are beginning music classes for students who missed out on playing instruments at a younger age, but are interested and motivated to learn to play an instrument in high school. This is unique to any music program in the area, as nearly every other program begins in 6th grade and continues.

My Project

Our students are currently using old, regular classroom chairs for performance and practice in band. Some of these chairs are folding chairs, while other are mismatched chairs that are old enough to have uncomfortable cracks up the backs and on the seats. Students sometimes find their hair getting caught in the backs, to pants snagging on the seats. Not only are they uncomfortable, but they do not promote proper music playing. The chairs we are trying to provide help musicians by being specifically designed for proper posture, which in turn helps students breathe better. Proper breathing for musicians is extremely important to a student's musicianship and ability to more easily improve their skills. These chairs would replace the old ones, which are not only are used to practice, but are also for concerts and other performances. Along with proper posture, the chairs would also look more professional, and enabling our students to feel just a little more special and proud to perform to the public is priceless.
