“Ah, music," he said, wiping his eyes. "A magic beyond all we do here!” -Albus Dumbledore (Headmaster of Hogwarts)
Don't let title 1 fool you, my elementary students are hungry for music and ready to battle whatever challenges they face.
We have worked incredibly hard in the past two years to turn our music program into one of the fastest growing in the district. They volunteer extra hours to commit to music education outside of school and submit non-required, ungraded work for the room including written lyrics, music notation sheets, and rehearsal plans.
My Project
These are essential curriculum supplies! We now have 15 guitars in the room ready for use. I want to expand beyond basic chords and improvisational instruction. With these materials, my 2nd through 5th graders will learn how to use picks without fear of loosing or breaking too many. The books will strengthen their notation reading and chord chart reading skills while working on popular music. The Musical for the K-1 is in the late Spring. I want a fun, amusing performance. And how cool would it be if my 5th graders played guitar for their musical? Lots of possibilities...
Watching someone play a guitar or sing is one thing.
Learning to play and sing is a completely different level. Playing along to favorites songs inspires one to strive further. An insatiable hunger builds inside, soon the only thing they want to do is get better. This is the mindset I am instilling into my students. This hunger will travel to other aspects of school and life. They will understand not to settle for less. Learning music cultures resilient, intelligent, and forever young minds.
