My Students

"Self-regulation is guidance of ones own goal directed thinking, feeling and action". Daily my students use music while practicing self-regulation skills in the morning during breakfast/check-in time, completing independent work, and during quiet break time.

My amazing students are impacted by a variety of social/emotional, learning and/or communication disabilities.

Most have significant adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and have experienced or are actively experiencing significant trauma/life stressors. It is a structured middle school classroom placed in a public school setting. My classroom provides a regulating therapeutic learning environment by providing a predictable structure, consistent feedback, calming affect and attunement to the student’s individual needs. This approach allows opportunities to address academic, communication and emotional-regulation deficits. We work daily on teaching students skills needed to self-manage and cope so that they can be regulated and in turn, access their academic instruction. My classroom provides point of performance coaching and modeling with the goal of students improving the access of their cognitive skills, eventually attending classes in the general education setting.

My Project

Many tools can be used to self-regulate and cope with stressors. Music has been a researched supported tool for people to use as a soothing activity. My students will be using the iPod Nanos to listen to while working on their independent work time, while taking a break between academic instruction and/or during a self-directed break. They will use the music to block out classroom distractions, help focus their emotions, use to calm themselves down and/or keep themselves regulated while completing an additional activity. My goal is to scaffold students to a level of independence for initiating individualized self-regulating tools both in my classroom and other educational settings. I would like my students to be able to listen to instruction then initiate the request for music to keep them focus, be able to independently ask for and use music to assist them in calming down when dis-regulated and/or use music to keep them quietly regulated during classroom "down" or break times.

The donation of the iPod Nanos will provide me with updated technology for providing music that assists with sensory integration.

Being able have sound sensory integration leads to self-regulating oneself, which leads to relational functioning that eventually moves into accessing ones cognitive skills. Effectively using cognitive skills allows my students to be receptive to their classroom instruction. Being regulated during classroom instruction leads to increased academic and social skills.
