My students are placed into my classroom due to their struggles with emotional regulation, which can greatly impact their access to education and learning. Many had and currently experience active trauma, stressors and/or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES). They are are often resistant to learning but given the correct attunement to their needs and using the neuro-developmental skills and demands model, learning can be less intimidating and reduces frustration. My students need a variety of avenues for learning and presenting information on a daily basis. The classroom provides a predictable environment with consistent response and patterned, repetitive routines, which provides external self-regulation. In turn, my staff and I can implement point of performance coaching for emotional regulation, academic and social skill development.
