Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a First Grade Spanish Bilingual Teacher who works with low income Latino students in an early transition program. I have recently moved to a new school. Early transition means that the students need to be ready to transition to English after Third Grade. Since the language demands of these students are great most of our time is spent in either Spanish Language Arts or English Language instruction. My students have limited time for other activities such as math and music, therefore, I strive to integrate both subjects.
I have received some training in integrating math and music through a project called Young Imaginations at the school where I was previously. Young Imaginations uses music to teach concepts like patterns, money, time, geometry, addition and subtraction. One lesson involves investigating symmetry by mirroring another student's movements. For students who are kinesthetic and visual it is far easier to learn the concept through actions.
Along with the activities songs are added to help students remember key math concepts such as money. Learning the distinct features of the coins and their worth is made easier by singing them. Some songs are created by teachers and put to the tune of other known songs. Other songs are created by several children's artists in order to foster learning. Students who have trouble identifying a coin are often found singing the songs to help jog their memory. I've even heard singing during testing.
Since the program began, students were more engaged and thus performed better in math as well as acquired a better appreciation for music.
In addition, connecting music, movement and math aids students in learning the equivalent English vocabulary for concepts that they have been exposed to in Spanish. I have noticed that students with limited English skills would attempt to sing along and thus acquire more confidence and practice in the safe whole group singing environment.
I would love to continue some of the skills that I learned in the program. However, I need materials to do so.
I need the following in order to create patterns using musical instruments:
1. Rhythm sticks
2. other rhythm instruments
I need the following in order to use songs for geometric movements, addition and subtraction songs and stories, and math chants.
3. CD's
4. Math manipulatives for whole class activities
Please help me make singing and music a part of math so that the students will learn more effectively and learn to appreciate various types of music.
Thank you.
