My Students

I am a K-12 music teacher in one of the poorest districts in Tennessee. I teach band and music at all three schools in my district. Many of my students experience financial, emotional, and family hardships that take a toll on their everyday lives. Despite the hardships, my students come to music each day eager to learn and improve on their musicianship. This is my fourth year and we are steadily growing and improving the musicianship in our district. I am optimistic this growth will continue, but a little extra help could give us a boost. A large percentage of my students use school-owned instruments due to financial hardships. We, fortunately, have had just enough instruments this school year for the students we have.

I want to provide awesome music-making​ opportunities for my students and your help could set us on the path for great success.

My Project

In my general music classroom, we lack some of the resources to complete certain activities in our textbook. We usually have to omit textbook activities using a piano, since we don't have the necessary resources in the classroom. The addition of a piano keyboard would allow us to complete these activities while also providing students with the basic foundational understanding of how the piano works.

Additional instruments would be so beneficial to our students.

Other resources that are greatly needed are boomwhackers and lummi sticks. The younger elementary students greatly benefit from these instruments and these instruments provide a foundation for instrument playing. The boomwhacker set that we have requested is a full set including chromatics. This will allow us to play more challenging music. Also, YouTube has become a very valuable resource with our boomwhackers. There are play-along videos on YouTube that the students can perform with. The excitement in their eyes when they are able to make music with the boomwhackers is amazing. The addition boomwhackers would be so great to take my students to the next level.
