Musical Imaginings: Encouraging Literacy in the Music Classroom
My students need well-written books, especially ones like Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin, so they can understand that music is always accessible, not just during their once a week music class!

My Students
I teach elementary music at two of the elementary schools in my school district. Even though many of my students face personal challenges, they come into music with smiles on their faces ready to sing, dance, and play on instruments. They are truly gifted young musicians who teach me more about perseverance, self-confidence, and joy than I could ever teach them in the forty minutes a week they come to music class.
The students at my school are diverse in race, social status, and ability; yet, they come together as friends and cheer each other on to succeed.
Our school places special emphasis on character, succeeding in academics, and meeting the needs of each individual student so no one slips through the cracks. Because of this commitment of our administration and staff to our students, our students know they are valued, safe, and believed in.
My Project
As a child, some of my most vivid memories are of listening to others reading books to me or reading books by myself. I would imagine myself as the main character and get lost in the magical world of imagining. As a music teacher, I want my students to understand that music doesn't just belong in the classroom which is why I am requesting books. It belongs in every part of their life.
For many of my students, reading offers them a chance to explore the world in a way they will never be able to due to their life-circumstances.
By encouraging them to read fictional books about real or non-real musicians, they can be exposed to the many different windows of the musical world while also increasing their literary skills.
