I teach music to students in Kindergarten through Fifth grade. I teach in an inner-city school where the majority of my students live in poverty and have had a lot of hardships. Despite their hardships, they enjoy learning and work hard to be successful in school.
Over the 11 years, I have taught at this school, I am constantly amazed by the talent, creativity, and passion my students show for music!
I always have high expectations for my students, and every year they meet or exceed those expectations.
My Project
Music carpets play an important role in the music class. They not only give each student their own spot for music activities, but they help asorb the sound in music class. In my class, we use floor space for all kinds of music activities. My students move to the music, play passing games, perform on instruments, read music stories, and play singing games on the floor. Currently, I only have one carpet that only covers a small portion of my music room. It is not large enough for all my students and it is not music specific. With this music carpet, I will be able to expand the floor space my students can use and play music specific games using this carpet.
My students will love having this carpet because it will allow every student a chance to participate and engage in our music activities together.
Currently, I do not have enough space to have everyone on the carpet, so students have to take turns playing music activities on the carpet. Some of my students get frustrated waiting their turn to go on the carpet. This carpet would allow everyone to fit on the floor and be part of the music experience. Another great feature of this carpet is the countless ways I can use it to reinforce music. Since it has a huge music staff on it, I can have students play games to learn their lines and spaces on the staff. They can race to a certain line or space or throw bean bags. Most of my students learn best when they can do kinesthetic learning, so this carpet allows them to physically move on the staff. Students will also learn their music symbols and instruments easily by recognizing spots. This carpet gives me so many musical opportunities!
