This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach approximately 300 students in grades K-6. My students are passionate about creating and performing music. Many of them share that music class is their favorite part of the school day. I often have to gently nudge them out the door when class is over, as they exclaim that they want to stay and have music class all day!
Magic happens in the music room every day, as students cross the threshold into a realm of creativity and personal expression.
For thirty minutes, my students experience the joy of singing, moving, and playing instruments. They thrive in becoming agents of their own learning, using music as a tool for self-expression and self-advocacy. Most of all, in the music room my students find a place where they belong, a place where their voices are acknowledged and welcomed.
One skill that developing musicians need to learn is how to properly annotate their music. We sometimes need to add fingerings, bow markings, and other reminders to help us perform with correct technique. A document camera would be a helpful addition to our classroom. When I verbally tell students where to mark something in their music, they do not always understand exactly what or how to annotate it. Using a document camera would allow me to project a clear image of myself writing on a hard copy of the music, mirroring what they have in front of them. Many of my students learn by doing. Watching me annotate the music on my own paper and then copying the markings on their own will help them to develop this crucial musicianship skill. Thank you for supporting my students' growth in their musical literacy!
