My students and families are a diverse community who come from South Africa, Puerto Rico, Mexico, República Dominicana, Taiwan. But in our class, there is a common purpose: unity! Despite our differences, our goal is to come together as one respectful community.
How do we hold on to our own cultures and at the same time, find unity in learning two languages together at our bilingual school?
My students and families are amazing at this because they are willing to try! They are challenged with leaving their comfort zone to learn flexibility, curiosity, and adaptability.
My Project
Imagine going to Kindergarten where pretty much everyone else speaks a different language than yours, even your teacher! Music is crucial when you teach a second language to children, because music becomes a common language for everyone, no matter what their culture is.
Music will do its job bringing people together!
The power of music throughout the years have made a big difference in all my students. Since day one in my classroom, we are singing. We sing mostly in Spanish. I also play the ukulele for my students which makes our sing along more exciting! Children learn Spanish feeling safe, confident and happy! Parents feedback also, is always very positive.
This year I would love to add a set of instruments to my classroom's sing alongs so my students are not only singing, but also playing with me. The blue ukulele will be a special treat for them, because then, they will be playing as a duo with their teacher. What a treat!
If just singing and clapping at the rhythm of the songs is so encouraging for my students, imagine the impact of singing along with an instrument!
