This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning proceeds only if we interact with the world. Creating a rich sensory environment is critical in the development of young children.

I work with an amazing group of little ones who have special needs.

The students are kindergarten age and have various disabilities such as high functioning Autism, speech and language delays, to mild mental retardation. The school is in a lower socioeconomic community, with very little resources in the community for young children with special needs.

My Project

Research has been able to provide evidence that young children who participate in creating music show different brain development and improved memory. Creating music through dance, singing, playing an instrument,can improve speech development, listening skills, and concentration. The children will use these instruments to learn how to follow/imitate simple patterns. For example, I may tap the rhythm sticks (tap, tap, pause, tap). The children will then imitate my pattern. Once they have learned how to imitate simple patterns by listening and watching, I will show them how to "read" music notes. This will be accomplished by showing them notes on the board and they have to match the tapping to the written notes. For example if there are three dots (dot, dot, rest symbol, dot) the student will tap, tap, no tap, tap). The students will then be encouraged to write their own music that the class can follow. Various instruments will be used to teach this type of lesson.

Exposing children to music, researchers believe that more pathways, or neural connection, are formed between the cells in the brain.

Chanting, stomping, clapping and dancing are all ways to stimulate the brain. Your donation will help create one more means of improving brain development and by getting music back into the classroom and into the lives of children.
