My students are budding musicians. They are excited to explore new ways to make, share, and experience music. My school is located in a rural area in Wisconsin. The school is in a beautiful location, surrounded by farm fields. Current student enrollment is approximately one hundred and thirty students in grades K-5. Just under 50 % of the students qualify for free and reduced meals. This is a small school, and with just one class per grade level, students progress through their time here as a family, moving from grade to grade with the same group of kids. As the music teacher, I get to see every student for two thirty minute music classes each week.
My students are full of energy and enthusiasm and are learning to use their bodies to create and experience music!
They like to jump, wiggle, dance, crawl, stomp, and spin. They like to create and experience different types of music. There are so many ways for them to experience music at this age.
My Project
I see my students for only 30 minutes, 2 times each week. During this time we are singing, dancing, creating, instrument playing, responding to, and learning about music. I want to provide opportunities for students to continue this learning outside of the short time that I get to see them in my classroom.
I want to provide families with opportunities to participate in their child's musical learning journey, and one way to do this is to make resources that students use in my classroom available for them to use at home.
My goal is to create a Music Resource Lending Library to provide students with the opportunity to check out instruments, CDs, books, DVDs, and movement props home with them to continue their musical learning at home with their families. This project is just one step towards that goal. It will provide the music room library with CDs for students take home and listen to while they dance, keep a steady beat on instruments they have checked out, or to simply listen and experience different types of music.
