This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a first year, first grade teacher at a school in Chicago's Cabrini Green neighborhood. My students live across the street from the school in the projects, where life is not easy. At only six years of age, many of my students have had first hand experience with rape, drugs, and violence. Knowing this, I work extra hard to ensure that my classroom is a warm, welcoming safe haven for my eighteen little ones.
One tool that I use constantly is music. Throughout the day, there is almost always some type of music on in my room. I play different types for different purposes; Beethoven during morning work, Bach during math, Raffi for sing-alongs, etc. I have found this to be very comforting and soothing for the children. They have grown to love certain music, and request it at times when I forget to turn it on.
I have introduced the students to some music from different parts of the world with CDs that I have borrowed, but I would love to have a permanent collection of music from a variety of cultures. I know that having this available would not only provide relaxation and entertainment for my students, but it would peak their interest in new cultures and would provide a jumping off point for our studies.
With a collection of world music CDs from Putumayo, I would have the opportunity to open my students' ears to sounds from around the world. I know that this would have a lasting impact on children who don't get to see very much of the world outside of their housing complex.
