Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My music room resembles the 1969 construction of our school. Resources are outdated and nonexistent.
My school is a title 1 campus and in a very low economic area.
Students receive free school supplies, many are enrolled in free or reduced lunches, and a lot of students cannot commit to things that require additional time outside the school day.
Students are in general music class starting in 3rd grade-6th grade. 3rd graders receive a 30 minute music period one time a week. 4th-6th grade students receive a 40 minute music period one time a week. In addition, 5th-6th graders have a choice to be in band, strings, or chorus one time a week.
Students range from many different diverse backgrounds with many different family situations. Students receive a lot of different academic pullouts. Music is the only class students receive outside of their regular academic day. There is no PE.
My Project
Playing games that reinforce the theory instruction occurring in class will make learning theory more fun AND make the kids remember the material better. This will be obtained through BINGO games and rhythm stick games.
Students also need more popular music to learn how to play the recorder. Learning songs that the students know will make them want to learn the instrument faster and enjoy it more.
A recording device will allow the students to hear how they are performing and evaluate their performance. The recording device is a little bigger than an iphone and the files can be sent through email for the students to hear at home.
There are also some books that I have requested that teach classical music through pictures and will help make learning classical music more fun for the students.
Due to standardized testing, students are unable to explore their creative side in a lot of their academic learning.
Music allows students to explore their creative side through music and learn more about themselves. Music is a universal language and the more we use music in the lives of our students, the better their life will be.
