This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school in Houston, Texas. Many of the students live in the government housing around the school. The children come from many different backgrounds. The school population is primarily Hispanic and African American children.
They are amazing students who work hard every day to overcome the challenges they are presented with inside and outside of the classroom.
When given the opportunity, I have seen my students create wonderful music either through instruments, rapping, or singing. They get excited when they see the connections between music, math, and science. My students love learning about the world through the music of different cultures.
My Project
Two iPads would be a great addition to my music room. I will be able to use apps on the iPads for small group work, individual assessments, and whole group instruction.
These requested iPads will provide my students with access to student-friendly composition apps.
For example, Garage Band is an excellent app for beginning musicians, because it contains loops of pre-recorded sounds from all music genres that the students can experiment with.
Most of my students listen to some form of electronic music, especially hip hop and pop. Electronic music apps allow students to create music that is culturally relevant to them. The students will also be able to record their own voice, and create melodies using strings, piano, and drums.
The requested M-Audio Keystation Midi Controllers would teach the kids about how they can use midi devices to create the music they want to record in programs such as Garage Band. The USB B to Lightning cable is needed to connect the midi devices to the iPads. Two cables would be ideal, but one is a great start!
My students can get experience using iPads to record themselves practicing instruments, acting, and singing, so that they can self-evaluate their own performances.
In addition to composing and practicing music, iPads have a multitude of apps that will allow them to develop their musical skills. Music theory apps will allow my students to practice skills such as ear training, keeping a steady beat, and learning to read music symbols on the grand staff (notes, rhythms, tempo, dynamics, etc...). The students will use the internet on the iPad to research music genres and composers from around the world.
