This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The 200 music students at our school are an incredible group of respectful and talented young musicians who love playing their instruments. They participate in one of 5 ensembles at the school . We play several concerts throughout the year and also take field trips to perform at festivals and events.

My students are very enthusiastic, eager to learn, and enjoy taking on challenges.

I appreciate how hard-working they are, and how as a music program, we truly are a big family. Everyday I see these students helping each other, motivating each other, and just so eager to achieve their goals.

I have seen them grow into great student leaders who feel it is their responsibility to keep our music program growing and strong! They truly care. These students are part of an academically challenging and ethnically diverse Title I school which serves almost two thousand students.

My Project

Keeping a program of 200 music students running strong, using mainly school instruments requires many supplies. Especially that we are 100% online, I need to give students supplies in bulk when they come to pick them up. The supplies we are asking for are essential. Without them, the instruments simply don't work. The clarinet, oboe, and saxophone students won't be able to play without reeds and the violin, viola, cello, and bass students won't be able to play without strings. The brass instruments need valve oil.

Teaching and learning music 100% virtually is an incredible challenge, but the music students at John Burroughs Middle School are staying engaged and putting forth their best effort.

We rehearse the music over zoom as best we can and students make recordings of them playing for me to listen to. Next semester, we will be working towards a virtual concert, as we all miss those magical performance moments.

A large challenge with distance learning is for the orchestra students to tune themselves everyday. Here is a testimonial from one of our students:

Dear Donors,

Due to this pandemic it has been challenging to raise money for our music program. Since we are at home everyday, our orchestra class has to tune our instruments with the pegs. Tuning with the pegs is really challenging because we have to be really careful not to tighten them too much. If we do, the strings might pop or break and we don’t have a lot of spare strings. Each instrument has different strings and they can get pretty expensive. Some of us have not been able to experience playing our instruments correctly because we are not at school. We would appreciate any support that is given to our program, so we can continue playing the music we love!
