Music Students Need Music Books and CD Library

My project needs 15 student music books, some of which include CDs, to build a classroom music library.

As the general music teacher at 2 elementary schools, I teach over 600 students in grades K-8. My classes include general music and group piano. In the general music classes students sing, listen to and analyze music, move, and play instruments. In the keyboard class students learn to play MIDI electric keyboards and develop performance skills. Students also learn about music theory and learn to compose simple songs. One school is an arts magnet school, and the other school is an International Baccalaureate School. One of the schools has a number of autistic students.

Although my students are enthusiastic about learning music, I face a major obstacle at both schools. Neither school has a supply of children's books related to my subject area, music. Ideally my music classrooms should have an ample supply of children's books written for children of varying reading levels. Children should have access to a wide variety of books related to music at their reading level within my classroom, and I should also have access to a wide variety of children's books to refer to during music lessons. The book subjects should include music history, fiction related to music themes, biographies of musicians, and music theory. I currently have no children's books in my classrooms.

In the future I hope to obtain a music classroom library including music fiction, biographies, music theory, and music history. I intend to build a library that would be utilized by students in grades K-8 and would be used by myself and by students during lessons. In this proposal I am requesting 15 children's books, some with CDs. These books will be shared between the 2 schools that I work at. The books will become the foundation for the classroom music library I will build at the 2 schools.

Your contribution to the music library will ensure that students are able to access music information independently and cooperatively while working in class projects. Requested items include The Story of the Orchestra, This Land is Your Land, Zin Zin Violin, Do Re Mi, and Jolly Mon among others. Your donation will allow students to research and read about information of particular interest. All materials will be used in lessons based on National Music Education Standards.
