I am the librarian in an inner city, K-6 Expeditionary Learning School. Like most city schools, our school is severely shortchanged in manpower. So, in addition to being the librarian, I am also the lunch aide for our first and second grade students every day.
Our first and second grade students all eat together in a very tiny lunchroom area. With over 100 students eating there daily, it gets very loud! Although the staff tries very hard to keep the noise level down, there are times when we all leave with splitting headaches.
After much discussion, we decided that one optimal solution would be to add music to the lunchroom. If the students can hear the music, then the volume in the room would be appropriate. However, if they couldn't hear the music, they would have to lower their voices. An added bonus would be that the first and second grade students would learn the lyrics and sing along. This would make lunchtime a joy!
We already have the Cd's (Raffi, the Wiggles...) and our children love to sing. However, we lack the equipment to play our songs. Music would be a soothing addition to the lunchroom and one where we would all benefit. Thank you so much for your consideration.
