Help me give my students a set of picture books with rhythmic texts as well as texts from famous folk songs such as those included in the Classic Stories Book and CD collection.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, my elementary music students have been facing a severe disruption to their learning. Because all of my classes are currently being held via video conferencing rather than in person, student engagement is a challenge and I am especially concerned about the development of my students' reading skills. I am hoping this project will help encourage student engagement and support literacy development.
My students live in a diverse community that is facing a variety of educational, emotional and economic challenges due to the pandemic.
In the interactions I am able to have with my students and their families, it seems clear that many are overwhelmed. They are overwhelmed by technology and education issues, child care issues, financial issues, many things. My hope is that by building a nice library of music-related picture books in my classroom, I can use them to improve student engagement (online and in the classroom when my students return), support the development of their reading skills, and possibly ease the stresses they are feeling, even if just a little bit.
My Project
The collection of picture books selected for the Music: Rhythm, Reading and Rhymes project will allow me to encourage student engagement and support their literacy skills while my students continue distance learning and when they return to the classroom. The illustrations, rhythmic texts, and folk songs will be shared during video conferencing classes and for face-to-face instruction.
Songs and stories like "The Wheels on the Bus," "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," and "Green Eggs and Ham" will be used to capture students' imaginations.
In addition, these books will provide some of the tools needed for encouraging students' musical development as well as their reading skills.
