My Students

My students are truly amazing. This group of children is, by far, the best class I've ever had! They are passionate, thoughtful, kind, and deserving. They are great listeners and wonderful participants. I have 12 boys and 8 girls this year, which has proved to be a great balance. Our neighborhood has a mix of ethnicities and income levels, so each child has something very special to contribute. These children LOVE to learn through being active!

I have many students with special needs this year.

They require extra support to be successful, which is extremely difficult with the budget cuts our district implements almost every year. I teach in a low-income, Title I school, where 100% of the students receive free lunch and breakfast. Despite this, my students love being at school and are so eager to learn!

My Project

Our First grade team has the lucky opportunity to introduce music in the classrooms! Now all we need are the ukuleles!

This is an excellent avenue through which our students will be able to express themselves and communicate their learning in their own, unique, way.

Our school is Title I which means that we have a high percentage of students that live below the poverty level. We also have a high percentage of English Language Learners.

Most of our students have never played or seen an instrument before and this is an amazing opportunity to get instruments into their hands to explore both music and their inner selves. Learning through music helps to create a whole learning experience; accessing multiple learning styles in one lesson. The hope is to provide our children with equitable learning so they may grow and flourish both inside and out of the classroom.

We will be using the ukuleles to write and play original songs about space, animals, social studies, reading, writing, phonics, math - you name it, we're going to create it! Music is truly engaging and helps students retain information through repetition and patterns. I, along with the students, will be able to learn to play the ukuleles and really get in tune with our learning.
