My Students

Put another nickel in In the nickelodeon All I want is lovin you And music, music, music...How vividly I remember that music as it played against the scratch of my turntable on the old 33 my parents gave me. A strong memory, like this one, helps tie me to my roots as I continue to define who I am.

The students in my Title 1 Elementary School hail from all over the world, with a large concentration of students from China.

We have over 5 dialects of Chinese spoken throughout our facility, as well as Spanish, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Ukranian, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Tagalog, Uzbekistani, Bengali, Gujarati, Tajeki, Albanian, and even English. Most of our students are newly immigrated to the US or first generation Americans. Learning to assimilate to the American Culture while maintaining their cultural identities is a precarious challenge, but one that we support with great passion at our school.

My Project

Music and dance are part of every cultural experience. They are common threads that tie all of my students together. While music and dance styles can vary across cultures, the ideas of rhythm and movement are universal. By using music from around the world to inspire our movement and dance, we can learn about each Other's cultures, build our skills as dancers, and improve our health, all while transcending any language barriers that stand in our way of every day communication. My students need 16 new Putomayo World Music CDs to increase the multicultural variety of music available to them in Dance and Physical Education class.

By supporting this project, you will be giving my students more than a mere 16 multicultural CDs.

You will be providing them with essential tools that will enable them to transcend language barriers and learn about one another's cultures as they dance their way into better health. So, "C'mon, everybody. Put some nickels in; And keep that old Nickelodeon playing."
