Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am hoping to inspire students and have them enjoy both literacy and music. I teach 26 kindergarten students in a high-poverty, inner-city school. About 1/3 of my students are Hispanic and the rest are African-American.

Despite the differences in their cultural backgrounds, I have found that all of my students love music. Unfortunately, we do not have instruments for the kids to play or resources to help me incorporate music into the curriculum.

In order to successfully bring my students' love of music into the curriculum, I am requesting funding for a set of instruments that come with books that incorporate music into them, whether through song lyrics or the natural beat of the story. The set also includes a resource for teachers on how to use the books and instruments together. I am also requesting a bongo drum for the students to use. These resources will enrich the stories being read aloud by allowing the students to be engaged both physically and mentally.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to express their musical talents and become interested in reading. As a result of your generosity, I hope that my students will develop a love of reading and see books as tools to gain information and musical inspiration.
