Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am entering my second year of teaching Kindergarten Special Education at PS 130 in the South Bronx. One thing I have learned from having just completed my first year of teaching, is that music plays a key role in students' learning. I worked hard to incorporate songs and rhythms into every area of my teaching over the course of the year. Music helped my students make transitions in the classroom, learn rhyming skills, and even how to count. While we spent a lot of time singing and listening to music, there was one aspect lacking in our classroom, and that was experience with actual instruments. This year, I seek to acquire some class sets of various musical instruments so that my students can learn to create their own music as well. My students do not have the opportunity to go to a music class during the week outside of my classroom, so I want to bring the music to them. Teaching a class of students with special needs, it is especially important that all students find an area in the classroom in which they can feel success. Music is one of those areas where I believe many of my students would in fact flourish if given the opportunity. Please help to ignite this spark in the lives of these early learners by funding this proposal and making music matter in the classroom.
