My students need 24 recorders and 24 method books. Every year I teach music skills with recorders. Students get to perform for the school community at seasonal festivals.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Instrumental music, visual arts skills, dance, and theater- my students thrive creatively when given opportunities to explore, practice, and gain mastery of the arts when they are integrated with depth into the curriculum. I teach third grade students in a School for Advanced Studies program, which, in our district, is an instructional option for gifted and talented students, high achievers, advanced thinkers, creative thinkers, and other ability students. It is a type of academy within a neighborhood public school in an economically disadvantaged urban area.
My students are special because they have amazing potential to start looking at all curricular areas in greater depth and complexity.
I love teaching third grade because it is a developmental age of vast cognitive and creative growth. We also especially relish giving them opportunities for growth in all the arts -visual arts, theater, dance, and music and watching each student discover new avenues of expression and self awareness.
My Project
I have been teaching recorders in third grade for 17 years, and, every year I love the moment, after weeks of mastering how to read music and manage the fingering on the recorder, they finally play a song they recognize. The wide-eyed look of accomplishment and joy is priceless. Their pride in playing pieces such as "Jingle Bells" and "Ode to Joy" for the winter festival program is not to be missed.
By learning how to play recorders, students increase their instructional focus, refine fine motor skills, and master new areas of expression that bring joy and pride to their lives.
