I work at an arts based charter school. Many of the children that I teach love to dance. I also run an afterschool dance and drama club. A few years ago, I bought a stereo to use in the classroom and at the club to enhance our dancing experiences. The stereo is falling apart now and needs to be replaced. We use it in so many ways. We use it for class parties, impromtu moments of expression, for poetry recitals, theater pieces, well, I could go on forever. At home, some students are creating their own digital recordings of live music jams, or computerized / synthesized music. The children can burn their own cd's, but when they bring their cretive enterprises to share with the class, there is disappointment. While I promote live music making as often as possible, it can be great fun to simply take some minutes in the day to just relax and find our rhythms together.
